Avalanche is a Layer 1 blockchain platform designed for speed, scalability, and institutional adoption. It was created by Ava Labs, a company founded in 2018 by Emin Gun Sirer, a Cornell University computer science professor who spent over two decades researching distributed systems and peer-to-peer networks. Sirer co-authored an influential work on Bitcoin's vulnerabilities and built one of the earliest virtual currencies (Karma) in 2003, five years before Bitcoin existed.
