APE exploded into the crypto market with a surprise airdrop to Yuga Labs NFT owners on 17 March 2022. It was launched by a group called the APE Foundation to serve as the governance token of the Yuga Labs Bored Apes NFT ecosystem.
Yuga’s products include hot NFT collections like Bored Apes, CryptoPunks, and MeeBits. APE Foundation is a separate organization, but Yuga’s leaders are its founders.
Yuga’s NFT collections have inspired support from such notable celebrities as tennis star Serena Williams, rapper Eminem, Boost founder Adam Draper, socialite Paris Hilton, and investment guru Mark Cuban.
The airdrop awarded 15% of the total supply of ApeCoins to Bored Apes and Mutant Apes NFT owners.
ApeCoin is built on the Ethereum blockchain. It is intended, according to APE Foundation statements, to allow token holders to participate in a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) charged with decision-making for the token and the Yuga ecosystem. It will also serve as an internal currency for buying and selling Yuga NFTs, and token holders may be eligible for exclusive benefits, including games, merchandise, events, and services.
